Become an ambassador, wear cool orange vest

Training for folks who aspire to become a Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail ambassador will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday in the DH Day Log Cabin in the DH Day Campground. As an official park volunteer, trail ambassadors help visitors by answering questions and giving directions. They also act as the “eyes and ears” on the trail, reporting maintenance or safety issues.

Get your polka shoes on for mom

The Polski Chix, the only all-girls polka band in the country, plans to roll out the barrel at the St. Rita’s Mother’s Day Dance on Saturday. Half-step over to St. Rita’s/St. Joe’s Hall located just south of Maple City starting at 7:30 p.m. Dancing will continue until 11:30 p.m. Consider the evening a Polkafest warm-up act.

Help carriers help food banks

Bags of non-perishable food items can be left near your mailbox on Saturday for the National Rural Carriers Association annual food drive. Mail carriers will collect items for local food pantries. Empire Post Office clerk Jennelle Pelky hopes for another strong collection. “The last few years, we have been really successful picking up lots of non-perishables for our food pantries,” she said.
